House decoration is not only painting the walls and installing new carpet. You have to have the furniture that you like and you also have to add your own personal touches so that your house feels like a home. Small things that you want to display can go in many places, but you may not always have the right space for an item that you love. Think about some of the wall mount shelf kits that you can buy to add more space to your home for your belongings without cluttering up your home too much.
Some places come with wall mount shelf units already installed. These can be a good and they can also be unwanted. It depends on where they are, how big they are, and even when the house was built. If the shelves have been around for a long time, they tend to be rather dated looking. If you have such a set, you can paint them to update them and make the most of them. If you feel they make a room just too busy, you can take them out and redo that section of the wall. It is a big undertaking though, so make sure you are up to the task before you start ripping them out.
Otherwise, you can get wall mount shelf kits that resemble a bookcase. These are better than a free standing book case in many ways. For one, they are safer if you have children. At some point almost all kids start to climb anything that has a foothold to try to get whatever is up above their heads. If your shelves are anchored to the wall, the shelves will not fall over on them. Just make sure you get sturdy shelves and install them into a stud rather than just in the drywall. If you get a free standing bookcase, secure it to the wall with a kit you can buy anywhere for this purpose.
You can also get what are called floating wall mount shelf units. These are single shelves that appear as if they are built right into the wall. They have no visible brackets of which to speak, but they are up on the wall none-the-less. These have a bracket that actually hides within the shelf so that the shelf adds to your décor rather than mucking up your walls with unsightly supports. These cannot hold a lot of items, but you can put a few choice items on them and place them anywhere you want in a room. They really can make a blank wall look great when you don’t have anything else to put there.
If you want to add color to your wall mount shelf unit, make sure you paint or stain it before you hang it up. If you want to see what it will look like, hold it up but save the installation until you have decided on a final color choice and then done the work to make it so. If you try to paint these before they go up you can easily get paint on your walls, and when they come down some day, the walls will look even worse. Take a few hours to paint and let it dry first for the best overall look for your new shelves.
